The Hong Kong University of Science and Culture will soon unveil its Metaverse virtual campus. Students and faculty will now be able to create NFTs and personal avatars.
The Hong Kong University of Science and Culture plans to enter the world of metaverse by holding virtual reality classes. The University of Hong Kong has scanned two of its campuses and is using the images to create metaverse models. China has banned cryptocurrency; But it still welcomes Metaverse projects and companies.
Launching the Metaverse virtual campus in Hong Kong
Students of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology will soon be able to participate in Metaverse classes. The Hong Kong University of Science and Culture is building digital versions of its two campuses in Hong Kong and China.
The campuses of this university will be part of MetaHKUST faculty. The project is led by two university professors, Wang Yang, project leader, and Pan Hui, director of the Center for Metaverse and Computational Creativity.
The Hong Kong University of Science and Culture explained in a news conference on Thursday that the project aims to consolidate all physical and virtual experiences in the university. Imagine that students use virtual reality headsets in lectures, on which certain information and data are displayed, and there is the ability to move to classrooms in different campuses.
Steps to set up the Metaverse virtual campus
In the first phase, physical infrastructure including XR classes, sensors, cameras and visualization tools will be installed. Next, the university scans the physical campus. The campuses of two universities in Hong Kong and Guangzhou, China will be scanned at this stage. Scanned images are collected and metaverse copies are produced from it.
Students and professors of the Metaverse virtual campus can design their avatars, NFTs, signs and artworks in the Metaverse environment. They can also receive their transcripts and certificates as NFTs. The University of Hong Kong will also be equipped with augmented reality technology. According to Hui, this technology is still in single-user mode and has significant limitations in terms of time and space.
Hui went on to say:
We seek to expand technology for large environments and create massive multi-user experiences that not only represent the core challenge of our physical-digital vision, but are also the key factor that differentiates Hong Kong Science and Culture University from other educational venues.
The interest of big companies in Metaverse
Another advantage of setting up the Metaverse campus is the proximity of the two campuses in China and Hong Kong. Travel between China and Hong Kong remains severely restricted due to Covid-19. Through the initiatives of the Hong Kong University of Science and Culture, students can join lectures and events that take place on both campuses. The Chinese government is putting pressure on institutions such as universities to establish more ties between Hong Kong and China, especially after the massive protests in Hong Kong over Chinese rule.
Currently, most of the tech companies active in China are interested in Metaverse. Despite the ban on digital currencies in China, Metaverse has received attention and support at the provincial and national levels of this country.
Pony Ma, CEO of Chinese gaming and social media giant Tencent, said in November that he sees Metaverse as a huge opportunity. Owners of Tik Tok, Byte Dance, Alibaba, Net Ace, and Baidu have also shown interest in Metaverse.
