In an article published in Scientific American, Elmira Usmanovic Tunström says that the project first began as a simple experiment to determine how well the OpenAI text generation algorithm could write about itself. But now the result of the work is under review for publication in a scientific journal. The initial instruction of this Swedish researcher to this algorithm was very simple:
Write a 500-word essay about GPT-3 and include scientific references and sources.
But when the algorithm starts writing and Elmira is faced with the results, she is surprised. Tunström, who works in neuroscience and health technologies at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden, says the result is very similar to today’s scientific papers. With the help of Stein Steingrimson, who is now introduced as the third author of the article along with GTP-3 and Tunström, he defined the minimum guidelines for this algorithm to get a comprehensive article of this computer algorithm.
This algorithm finally produced an article within two hours titled “Can GPT-3 write an academic paper by itself and with minimal human intervention?” This article is now published as a preprint in the HAL reference.
Tunström said that after finishing writing the article, he asked this artificial intelligence if he faced a conflict of interest while writing the article or if the algorithm’s answer was negative. He finally gets permission to publish the article from artificial intelligence and has now sent this article to a journal whose name has not yet been announced, for review and official publication.
Elmiran Usmanovic says that the big problem with the publication of this article was the question of its ownership, since it was written by an artificial intelligence, it practically did not have a legal name. He continues that the existence of such an article questions the idea of traditional scientific articles. Of course, what we know is that a door has been opened, but we must hope that Pandora’s box has not been opened!
